Abstract

The 2024 Monitoring the Future Survey by the National Institutes of Health shows that adolescent substance use in the US has remained at lower levels observed during the COVID-19 pandemic for the fourth consecutive year. Trends in drug use among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders are stable or declining, with alcohol, nicotine vaping, and cannabis being the most commonly reported substances. The director of NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse, Nora D Volkow, emphasized the need to investigate factors contributing to this trend to tailor interventions for continued support.
