Abstract

This article evaluates a Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) informed group intervention based on Irons and Beaumont's Compassionate Mind Workbook (2017), delivered within a Secondary Care Adult Community Treatment Team (CTT) in Northern England. The study involved six clients awaiting individual therapy who completed standardized measures of anxiety, depression, and fears of compassion before and after the 12-week group, with results indicating clinically meaningful improvements in anxiety, depression, and aspects of self-compassion for most participants. Qualitative interviews revealed themes of increased knowledge and skills related to self-compassion, the importance of a safe group environment, and hope for future change. The findings tentatively support the workbook-based CFT group as a potentially useful pre-therapy stabilisation intervention to enhance emotional regulation and readiness for further treatment, though the small sample size limits generalizability and further research is recommended.
