Abstract
The article discusses research on how clinical mental health counselors (CMHCs) in the United States handle requests for emotional support animal (ESA) letters. The study involved polling CMHCs, surveying 134 professionals, and conducting focus group discussions to understand the factors influencing their decisions regarding ESA letters. Key findings indicate that decisions were significantly affected by assessments of clients' disability status and the perceived benefits of ESAs, while many CMHCs reported a lack of formal training in ESA assessments and relied on personal discretion. The research highlights ambivalence and ethical concerns surrounding ESA requests among CMHCs. [Extracted from the article]
