Abstract
The article focuses on the current challenges and historical context of child neurology, particularly the subspecialty of neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD). It highlights a workforce shortage in child neurology and the decline of behavioral pediatric neurology, noting that only 61 child neurologists currently hold NDD board certification, while pediatricians increasingly pursue Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) certification. Referral patterns differ between DBP and child neurologists, with many adolescents being referred to adult neurologists, raising questions about care delivery and provider roles. The article emphasizes the need to revamp subspecialty training to include emerging fields like neurogenetics and advocates for coordinated, team-based care to better serve children with complex developmental disorders and their families.
