Abstract
This article focuses on the longitudinal interplay between perfectionism and perceived relationship quality in parent–adolescent dyads, applying the Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model (PSDM). The study, involving 443 Romanian adolescents (mean age 15.6) and their parents (mean age 43.8), found that adolescents' perceptions of a high-quality relationship with their mother predicted decreases in adolescents' perfectionistic concerns, while adolescents' perceptions of relationship quality with both parents predicted reductions in parental perfectionistic strivings. Conversely, parental perfectionistic strivings predicted decreases in adolescents' perceived relationship quality with their father. These findings suggest a bidirectional influence where relationship quality and perfectionism mutually affect each other, highlighting the importance of perceived security and trust in parent–adolescent relationships for mitigating perfectionism in both generations.
