Abstract

The article focuses on identifying delays in diagnosis and treatment initiation among treatment-naïve sputum-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients and their impact on sputum conversion after two months of antitubercular treatment (ATT). In a prospective study of 280 patients, delays were primarily attributed to the health system, with factors such as greater distance from health facilities, unskilled labor occupation, and initial visits to private practitioners associated with longer delays. Patients experiencing longer delays had significantly higher rates of sputum positivity at two months, indicating poorer treatment response. The study highlights the need for improved training of health professionals, better public outreach, and streamlined referral processes to reduce delays and enhance TB control efforts in India.
