Abstract

A recent report discusses research conducted at Rutgers University on mental disorders in traditional Purepecha healers in rural Michoacan, Mexico. The study focuses on the indigenous illness notions of nervios, susto, and locura (nerves, fright, and madness) and explores the conceptual structure, imagery, and notions of the soul associated with these concepts. The research suggests that the healers' understanding of mental disorders is highly metaphorical and defies purely structuralist analysis. The study also draws connections between the healers' modes of understanding and the Renaissance episteme and Heidegger's concept of "Being." The research has been peer-reviewed and is published in Transcultural Psychiatry. [Extracted from the article]
