Abstract

This article focuses on a study examining the association between antidepressant use, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and dental implant failure. Conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, India, the study reviews meta-analyses and cohort studies showing that patients taking antidepressants have a higher risk of dental implant failure compared to nonusers, with failure rates ranging from 6%-23% versus 2%-8% at the patient level. While the evidence indicates a clinically significant increased risk, the study notes limitations in establishing causality due to study design and statistical issues. The research recommends educating antidepressant users about this risk and addressing other implant failure factors, and it calls for further investigation in this area. [Extracted from the article]
