Abstract
This article focuses on a qualitative study examining the diagnosis and treatment of men with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) in community and forensic settings in Richmond, Australia. The research highlights challenges in differentiating BPD from ASPD due to overlapping emotional dysregulation and men's under-reporting of symptoms, compounded by distrust of mental health services. Expert clinicians emphasized the importance of building trust, addressing shame, and incorporating gender-specific factors to improve treatment engagement and outcomes. The study suggests that assessing empathetic functioning may aid in more accurate diagnosis and that targeting defensive barriers could enhance therapeutic effectiveness for men with personality disorders.
