Abstract
This article investigates the influence of the human hair follicle (HF) on the development and maturation of sensory neurons in its surrounding microenvironment. By analyzing single-cell RNA sequencing data and using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, the study found that specific HF cell types express genes for neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitter production, releasing substances such as serotonin and histamine. These findings suggest that the HF has a greater capacity to signal to the nervous system than interfollicular skin and may play a role in guiding sensory neuron growth. The research highlights a bidirectional relationship between the HF and the nervous system, emphasizing the HF's regulatory role within the skin's sensory microenvironment.
