Abstract
The article focuses on research conducted by the University of Miami regarding the long-term physical and mental health outcomes of individuals who experienced distressed births, specifically low birth weight (LBW), preterm delivery, and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. The study utilized data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) and found that all three types of distressed births are significantly associated with poorer physical and mental health in adulthood. The research emphasizes the importance of prevention initiatives, such as teenage family planning and prenatal care, to reduce the incidence of distressed births. Financial support for the study was provided by the NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD). [Extracted from the article]
