Abstract

This article examines the practice of palpation—the skilled use of hands to assess the size, position, and condition of a baby in the womb—primarily from the perspective of midwifery. It discusses how palpation, valued for its relational and embodied qualities, is increasingly supplanted by technological methods like ultrasound, raising questions about the significance of touch in prenatal care. Drawing on personal experience and reflective autoethnography, the author highlights the nuanced dynamics of power, comfort, and emotional connection involved in palpation, as well as its role within broader cultural and clinical maternity practices. The article also addresses disparities in maternity outcomes and the importance of listening attentively to both the pregnant person and the fetus during care.
