Abstract

This article investigates the prevalence of smartphone addiction tendency (SPAT) among medical university students at Hubei University in China and its association with personality traits. The cross-sectional study found a 24.3% prevalence of SPAT, with higher rates among students from one-child families and urban backgrounds. Multivariate analysis identified extraversion as a risk factor and neuroticism as a protective factor for SPAT, while longer daily smartphone use and lower frequency of physical exercise were also linked to higher addiction tendency. The study suggests that targeted interventions, including promoting physical activity and health education, may help reduce SPAT in this population.
