Abstract

This article focuses on comparing the efficacy of colchicine monotherapy to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) monotherapy or combination therapy for preventing recurrent acute pericarditis in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and/or coronary artery disease (CAD). In a retrospective cohort study of 77 patients, no significant difference was found in pericarditis recurrence or incessant symptoms within 12 months among those treated with colchicine alone, NSAIDs alone, or both. Given the known risks of NSAIDs in this population and the lack of prior evaluation of colchicine monotherapy, the study suggests colchicine alone may be similarly effective but highlights the need for prospective, randomized trials to confirm these findings. Limitations include the study’s retrospective design, small sample size, and variability in treatment regimens.
