Abstract
This article discusses the importance of nontechnical skills (NTS) in emergency medicine training and the need for their integration into medical education. NTS include leadership, team management, situational awareness, decision making, communication, and adaptive expertise. The article provides an overview of these skills, indicators of growth opportunities, teaching strategies, and assessment tools. It emphasizes the role of faculty in identifying and teaching NTS to improve clinical experiences for learners and optimize patient outcomes. The article also mentions various assessment tools, such as the NTS Score (NOTECHS+), TEAM, Clinical Teamwork Scale (CTS), NASA-Task Load Index (TLX), case-based assessment, biomarkers, and video review/eye-tracking technology. The authors acknowledge that these tools are not comprehensive or prescriptive, and faculty should use them flexibly based on their expertise and experience.
