Abstract

This article focuses on a study evaluating the baseline knowledge and awareness of the Heimlich maneuver among parents of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the impact of a structured educational intervention on their understanding of airway obstruction management. Conducted by researchers at Necmettin Erbakan University in Konya, Turkiye, the study involved 66 parents and used a 19-item questionnaire administered before and after training on recognizing, preventing, and responding to airway obstruction in infants, children, and adults. Results showed that prior to training, most parents lacked formal Heimlich maneuver education and had limited knowledge, but the intervention significantly improved their awareness, confidence, and ability to correctly identify and perform appropriate first aid techniques. The findings highlight the importance of targeted caregiver education to enhance emergency response skills in this high-risk population. [Extracted from the article]
