Abstract

This article evaluates the effectiveness of a multimodal pain control (MMPC) protocol compared to physician managed pain control (PMPC) in trauma patients at a community-based, level 1 trauma center. The study found that among severely injured adults (Injury Severity Score ≥15), MMPC significantly reduced opioid consumption by threefold and improved pain scores compared to PMPC. However, in the advanced age group (patients aged ≥55 years), MMPC did not significantly change opioid use or pain scores relative to PMPC. The findings suggest MMPC is effective in reducing opioid use while maintaining pain control in severely injured trauma patients, but tailored pain management strategies may be needed for older trauma populations.
