Abstract
The article focuses on a meta-analysis conducted by researchers from East China Normal University in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, examining the effects of attentional interference on reading comprehension in digital environments. The study synthesized data from 32 empirical studies and found that attentional distractions, such as background music and videos, negatively impact comprehension, particularly among older readers. The analysis identified various moderating factors, including study design and type of distraction, and emphasized the importance of minimizing distractions and designing interactive online platforms to enhance focus and self-regulated learning. The research highlights the cognitive limitations of attention in online reading contexts and suggests strategies for improving comprehension. [Extracted from the article]
