Abstract
The article focuses on Texas House Bill 7 (HB 7), a recently passed law that would allow private citizens to sue individuals and entities who send abortion pills into Texas, expanding the state's already strict abortion restrictions. If signed by Governor Greg Abbott, the law would permit lawsuits seeking at least $100,000 in damages against abortion pill manufacturers, providers, and others involved, while exempting pregnant individuals using the medication themselves. Supporters view the bill as a strong pro-life measure, whereas opponents criticize it as a tool to intimidate out-of-state providers protected by abortion shield laws, which safeguard abortion providers in 18 states and Washington, D.C. The law is expected to provoke legal conflicts between states with opposing abortion policies and may influence similar legislation elsewhere.
