Abstract

A polio vaccine campaign has begun in the Gaza Strip in response to a recent diagnosis of the disease in a 10-month-old baby. Health officials are concerned about the unsanitary conditions caused by 11 months of war, which could lead to a major outbreak. Israel has agreed to temporary ceasefires to allow for vaccinations. The campaign, led by United Nations agencies and the Hamas-run health ministry, started in central Gaza and will expand to other areas in the coming days. The vaccine being administered is for Type-2 polio, which has not been diagnosed in Gaza for 25 years. The goal is to vaccinate over 6,000 children aged newborn to 10 years old.
