Abstract

This reflection focuses on Abraham Maslow’s article "Toward a Humanistic Biology," exploring both the author’s initial admiration for Maslow’s contributions to humanistic psychology and subsequent disillusionment with Maslow’s pathologizing language regarding sexual diversity and mental illness. The commentary highlights tensions between Maslow’s advocacy for autonomous, subjective understanding of individuals and his exclusionary categorization of “healthy human beings,” suggesting these contradictions warrant critical reevaluation through a social justice lens. It concludes by proposing a community-oriented approach within humanistic psychology to address and transcend Maslow’s dated views while honoring his foundational influence, emphasizing the need for ongoing dialogue and growth in the field.
