Social media use and Myers-Briggs (MBTI) personality type.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between social media use and personality types as defined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which categorizes individuals based on preferences in Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I), Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N), Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F), and Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P). Drawing on multiple studies involving platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, and Reddit, the findings indicate that individuals with Extraversion and Intuition preferences generally have more positive views of and greater engagement with social media, though the Thinking-Feeling dimension influences the nature of content shared. Platform-specific trends show that Facebook users tend to be Extraverted and Feeling types, LinkedIn users are more often Extraverted and Thinking types, while Twitter/X users are more commonly Introverted and Intuitive with a Feeling preference. No consistent differences were found related to the Judging-Perceiving dimension across platforms.
