Abstract
TIME100 HealthLeaders Advocating for safer foodIn January 2025, the FDA finally banned Red Dye No. 3, which research has linked to cancer. The move was a long time coming, especially for Dr. Peter Lurie, who helped a public-interest group advocate against harmful synthetic chemicals in food, including the dye, in 1984. He's now president of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which helped develop legislation that led California to ban some dyes from school meals in 2024, and put pressure on the FDA to ban Red Dye No. 3 in food, three decades after it was barred in cosmetics.—M.F.PHOTO (COLOR) [Extracted from the article]
