Abstract

This article focuses on an environmental scan of the U.S. Military Health System’s (MHS) resources related to alcohol use (AU), alcohol use disorder (AUD), prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). While the MHS provides multiple clinical guidelines, policies, interventions, and educational tools addressing AU and AUD before and during pregnancy, no MHS-specific resources were found that focus on the diagnosis or management of FASD across the life course. The absence of FASD-specific guidelines and policies within the MHS highlights gaps in care for military families, despite the system’s comprehensive support for other neurodevelopmental disabilities. The findings suggest opportunities for the MHS to develop targeted policies and programs to improve FASD awareness, diagnosis, and management.
