Abstract

This article focuses on the prevalence of lifetime sexual, physical, and emotional abuse among adults with opioid use disorder (OUD) enrolled in a rural Colorado medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program and examines associations between abuse history and chronic pain (CP). Analysis of intake data from 476 MAT patients revealed that 23% reported sexual abuse, 43% physical abuse, and 58% emotional abuse during their lifetime, with physical abuse significantly associated with both a diagnosis of CP and higher pain severity. The study highlights that standard pain assessments often omit trauma history, suggesting that implementing trauma-informed screening and adjunct psychological interventions in healthcare settings may improve care, reduce stigma, and support recovery for patients with OUD.
