Abstract
The article focuses on the legacy of Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman, an early American horticulturist and conservationist who planted apple trees across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois in the early 1800s to support westward settlers. It highlights his unique approach of growing apple trees from seeds rather than grafting, resulting in fruit primarily suited for cider, and his generous nature in distributing trees to settlers. The piece also describes local celebrations of his life in Ohio, including festivals, museums, and historic byways preserving his contributions. Additionally, the author shares a personal appreciation for the Macoun apple variety, connecting it to Johnny Appleseed’s enduring influence on apple cultivation in the region.
