Abstract
The article focuses on the process of writing and editing the United States Declaration of Independence at the end of the 18th century. The author explores the historical record of the writing left by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, discusses how the Declaration helped to shape the meaning of several keywords, including slavery, freedom, equality, and race, and examines how these words have defined American culture and history.
