Abstract
In a series of now infamous cases such as the I Civil Rights Cases i (1883) and I Plessy v. Ferguson i (1896), the Court eviscerated both the nascent civil rights laws, and the very possibility of civil rights being protected by the law. Nor is the book a close reading of abolitionists' rhetoric and how it influenced the passage of America's first civil rights law, the Civil Rights Act of 1866, though, again, Schmidt does not ignore these issues. Founded in 1871, the National Rifle Association (NRA), an organization dedicated to protecting gun owners and producers, calls itself "America's longest-standing civil rights organization".
