Abstract

This article examines the transformation of King Henry VIII of England from a well-educated Renaissance prince into a tyrannical monarch driven by paranoia and a desperate need for a male heir. Initially embodying humanist ideals and ruling with charm and intellectual vigor, Henry's reign shifted dramatically following his failure to secure an annulment from Catherine of Aragon, leading to England's break with the Catholic Church and the establishment of the Church of England. Influential figures such as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Thomas More, and Anne Boleyn played key roles in his court and the unfolding political-religious crisis known as "The Great Matter." The article also explores theories about Henry's personality changes, including the impact of a severe jousting accident, and highlights the extensive executions and ruthless actions that marked his later years. Ultimately, Henry VIII's reign is portrayed as paradoxical, combining early promise with later despotism that profoundly altered England's religious and political landscape.
