Abstract

The article focuses on James Jones, known online as Notorious Cree, a Nehiyaw (Cree) artist from Tallcree First Nation in Northern Alberta who uses social media to preserve and promote Indigenous cultural traditions. Beginning during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jones shared videos of traditional hoop dances, a healing practice in many Indigenous communities, gaining millions of followers across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. He leverages his platform to highlight Indigenous dance and culture with humor while raising awareness about critical issues such as missing and murdered Indigenous women and the effects of Canada’s church-run residential school system.
