Abstract

This article examines how the Meiji Restoration transformed Japan from a feudal, isolated state under the Tokugawa shogunate into a modern, industrialized regional power between 1868 and 1912. The restoration ended centuries of samurai-led regional rule, centralized authority under Emperor Mutsuhito (Emperor Meiji), and introduced sweeping reforms including the abolition of feudalism, establishment of a constitutional monarchy, modernization of the military, and rapid industrialization supported by zaibatsu family businesses like Mitsubishi. Japan’s military victories in the First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War expanded its influence in Asia, while social changes dismantled the samurai class and marginalized indigenous groups such as the Ainu. The period also saw Japan’s increased engagement with Western powers through missions like the Iwakura Mission, shaping its political, economic, and military institutions for the 20th century.
