Abstract

The article examines the contrasting views of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson regarding the threats to the American republic, particularly in response to civil unrest exemplified by Shays's Rebellion and the Whiskey Rebellion. Hamilton feared that such insurrections could lead to the rise of a demagogue, advocating for a strong central government to maintain order, while Jefferson viewed these uprisings as legitimate expressions of resistance against government overreach, advocating for leniency and local self-governance. Their differing philosophies on the balance of power and liberty have shaped American political discourse, with Hamilton favoring a robust national authority and Jefferson championing individual rights and state sovereignty. The article also draws parallels to contemporary political dynamics, suggesting that the historical debate between Hamilton and Jefferson continues to influence modern governance and civil liberties.
