Abstract
This article critically examines how the video games Röki (Polygon Treehouse) and Knights and Bikes (Foam Sword Games) challenge traditional notions of heroism by centering child protagonists whose identities and strengths arise from interdependence rather than independence. Both games emphasize cooperative play and relational identity formation, using multimodal storytelling to destabilize binary oppositions common in Western heroic narratives, such as individualism versus community and civilization versus wilderness. Through gameplay mechanics and narrative design, these titles foreground themes of vulnerability, cooperation, and ecological and social balance, proposing an alternative heroism rooted in connection and mutual support rather than conquest and autonomy. The article argues that video games' unique affordances enable the exploration of these nuanced, non-linear hero stories, offering culturally sensitive critiques of conventional heroic myths.
