Abstract

This article provides a historical overview of public education in the United States, with a specific focus on the efforts of freedpeople and their advocates to establish universal schooling. It highlights the role of Horace Mann, a politician and education reformer, in promoting the idea of education for all. The article also discusses the challenges faced by educators in the South, particularly in rural areas, and the role of private associations in establishing schools. It further explores the role of the Freedmen's Bureau in creating educational opportunities for Black Americans after the Civil War, despite facing opposition from white southerners. However, the article notes that the dismantling of the bureau led to the era of formalized segregation. Overall, the article emphasizes the significant contributions of education reformers and abolitionists in laying the foundation for public education in the South and underscores the importance of education as a cornerstone of a nation.
