Abstract
The article reviews two 2024 books—*Explorers: A New History* by Matthew Lockwood and *The Explorers: A New History of America in Ten Expeditions* by Amanda Bellows—that seek to offer revisionist perspectives on the history of exploration by broadening the definition of explorers and discovery. Lockwood’s work spans a wide geographic and temporal range, introducing lesser-known figures and emphasizing the reliance of explorers on Indigenous knowledge, though it contains notable factual inaccuracies and problematic interpretations, especially regarding Lewis and Clark. Bellows focuses on American expeditions and diverse explorers, including women and people of color, but at times conflates exploration with migration and settlement, stretching the traditional meaning of exploration. Both books contribute to expanding the narrative beyond Euro-American figures but are better suited for general readers or newcomers to exploration history rather than specialists, due to their occasional errors and broad conceptualizations.
