Abstract
This article examines the discovery and significance of a Soviet spy radio, model R-394KM, found during an archaeological excavation in the Rhineland, Germany, dating to around 1987 in the late Cold War period. The radio, likely concealed by Soviet military intelligence (GRU), was intended for rapid military communication near key NATO nuclear and missile installations, such as the Pershing missile site at Steinheide. As rare archaeological evidence of Eastern Bloc espionage in West Germany, the find sheds light on covert intelligence operations where written records are scarce or inaccessible, illustrating the deep penetration of Warsaw Pact espionage in the region. The study highlights how contemporary archaeology can contribute to understanding Cold War history and its continuities into the present, especially given the destruction or classification of many related documents.
