Abstract

The article focuses on Russia's conquest of Siberia in the 16th century, driven by the desire for new territory and valuable natural resources, particularly furs. The initial efforts were led by adventurers and the noble Stroganov family under Tsar Ivan IV, culminating in the involvement of Cossack leader Yermak, who played a pivotal role in subjugating the Khanate of Sibir. The conquest was marked by violent confrontations, including the fall of the Khanate and the establishment of Russian settlements, which facilitated further expansion into Siberia and beyond. However, this expansion came at a significant cost to indigenous populations, leading to severe oppression and dramatic declines in their numbers due to violence and disease.
