Abstract

The article focuses on Eliza Harriot O'Connor's significant contributions to women's education and her influence on the gender-neutral language of the U.S. Constitution during the summer of 1787. Harriot, a pioneering female lecturer, advocated for women's rights to education and political representation, believing that her public lectures would inspire future generations of women. Despite her efforts, including the establishment of female academies and her ambitious plans for a female college, she faced opposition from contemporaries like Benjamin Rush, who promoted a more traditional view of women's roles.
