Abstract
The article reviews Elissa Bemporad's book *Legacy of Blood: Jews, Pogroms, and Ritual Murder in the Lands of the Soviets*, which examines the antisemitic violence during the Russian Civil War and its enduring political, social, and cultural effects in the Soviet Union up to 1953. Bemporad explores how Jews in the former Pale of Settlement came to view Bolshevik power as protective amid widespread pogroms, the persistence and transformation of the medieval blood libel myth in Soviet society, and the Soviet state's contradictory responses to antisemitism, including its denial of pogroms within its borders. The book also analyzes the impact of Soviet modernization, demographic shifts, and postwar antisemitism, culminating in the 1953 Doctors' Plot as a modern iteration of ritual murder accusations. Utilizing extensive archival research and case studies, Bemporad highlights the complex legacy of antisemitic violence and memory in Soviet history.
