Abstract
The article focuses on how members of the British public have used common law to challenge powerful polluters, linking a major 2025 legal case over river pollution in the Wye Valley to earlier environmental activism. Topics include the 1952 Pride of Derby lawsuit brought by anglers against industrial and municipal polluters, the limits of nuisance law in tackling changing sources of pollution, and emerging ideas such as the legal rights of rivers as new tools for environmental protection.
