Abstract
This article examines the 2015 play *The Situation* by Berlin-based Austrian-Israeli director Yael Ronen, which explores diverse perspectives on the Israel–Palestine conflict through a German-language classroom setting in Berlin. The play, known for its collaborative and performative approach, stages plurality and shared humanity in line with political philosopher Hannah Arendt's concept of plurality, emphasizing communication and encounter across difference. Following the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and Israel's military response, the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin cancelled a scheduled performance of *The Situation*, prompting debate about the role of theatre in times of conflict and censorship. The cancellation is analyzed as a troubling retreat from Arendtian plurality and political dialogue, especially given Berlin's significant Israeli and Palestinian communities and the theatre's history of engaging with difficult political topics. The article situates the play and its cancellation within broader German political and cultural contexts, including Germany's official stance on Israel and the contested memory politics surrounding the Holocaust and Palestinian histories.
