Abstract
The article reviews the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture's exhibition "Afro-futurism: A History of Black Futures," which explores Afrofuturism as a cultural practice envisioning liberated futures for Black life through art, music, science, and activism. The exhibition highlights historical figures like Benjamin Banneker and Phillis Wheatley as early Afrofuturists and features influential Black musicians, astronauts, and visual artists who have shaped Afrofuturist expression. While the exhibit emphasizes African American experiences and contributions, it offers limited engagement with Afrofuturism's global diaspora and critical perspectives on its themes. The display culminates with iconic artifacts such as Nichelle Nichols's Star Trek uniform and Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther costume, underscoring Afrofuturism's impact on Black identity and imagination.
