Abstract
The article focuses on recent archaeological findings at Stirling Old Bridge, Scotland's last surviving medieval bridge gate. During a watching brief linked to new lighting installations, archaeologists identified remains potentially dating back to the 12th century, including parts of a medieval bridge mill and structural elements of the bridge gate. Stirling Old Bridge, possibly built by James IV, played a crucial strategic and economic role in Scottish history, notably during key battles and as a defensive feature complementing the city's walls. The discovery of corbels supporting a timber superstructure provides rare physical evidence of the bridge gate, highlighting its historical significance.
