Abstract
The article focuses on British American Tobacco Plc's South Africa subsidiary's decision to cease local cigarette production due to the rise of illicit trade, which has significantly reduced sales volumes. The company will close its only factory in Gauteng by the end of the year and shift to importing cigarettes. The factory, operational since 1975 and employing around 230 staff, has been running at only 35% capacity due to an estimated 75% of the South African cigarette market being illicit. The increase in illegal cigarette sales has prompted tobacco companies to voice concerns about the impact on their profitability. [Extracted from the article]
