Abstract

This article advocates for a "connected constitutionalism" approach in comparative constitutional law, emphasizing the interdependence and power relations between the Global North and South, illustrated through an analysis of Arab constitutionalism. It challenges dominant Western-centric narratives by arguing that Islam and democracy are not inherently incompatible, highlighting how Arab constitutions incorporate Islamic law alongside popular sovereignty without necessarily undermining democratic principles. Empirical data from the Arab Spring period reveal strong popular support for democracy coexisting with Islamic values, despite economic and political challenges exacerbated by foreign interventions and neoliberal policies. The article concludes that the future of democracy in the Arab world depends on internal political dynamics within a shifting multipolar geopolitical environment, rather than cultural or religious determinism.
