Abstract

The article discusses Edward I's unconventional methods of recruiting an army for war in 1294 have been criticized by historians. It also mentions enlisted criminals and outlaws for his campaign through granting a royal pardon and historians have viewed this as an overreach of the royal prerogative and abuse of mercy. It mentions the recruitment included individuals who committed crimes against women and Jews, and a reminder of the vulnerability of widows and antisemitism in society.
