Abstract
The article focuses on how artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally reshaping the structure of consulting firms by automating tasks traditionally performed by junior consultants. It describes the decline of the longstanding "pyramid" model—characterized by large teams of junior staff supporting senior leaders—and the emergence of a new "obelisk" model, which features smaller, more senior-heavy teams supported by AI facilitators, engagement architects, and client leaders. The article highlights examples of AI-native boutique firms and discusses the challenges incumbent firms face in adapting their culture, talent development, and governance to this shift. It also emphasizes the importance of ethical AI governance in ensuring accountability as AI assumes a greater role in consulting decision-making.
