Abstract

American Indian readers will probably find the last four chapters more interesting than the previous, and I would certainly welcome a deeper interrogation into the twentieth-century stories of American Indians in California. Thankfully, this is not your parents' book on the history of California - unless one or both of your parents are descended from one of the many Native American tribes that continue to call California home. Chapter 6 (1873-1904) discusses mechanisms California Indians developed to continue to occupy the land that had been their homes in spite of the attitudes aimed at converting the Indian into productive members of the young but burgeoning California society.
