Abstract

The article relates the tale of Walter Hopkins, a Humboldt County resident who moved his family to Alaska after being swept up in the gold rush of late 1800s. It details the harsh conditions Walt and his wife, Mary, encountered in Alaska, including the injury and death of several miners and animals. It relates how Walt and his partner contracted typhoid fever. It discusses how women of the gold rush were viewed and treated.
