Abstract

"Frida Kahlo's early 1940s self-portraits, featuring monkeys hanging from her neck, were painted during a difficult period in her life, marked by a messy divorce and financial struggles. The documentary film 'Frida,' produced by TIME Studios and directed by Carla Gutierrez, explores how Kahlo channeled her personal tragedies into her art, creating vibrant surrealist paintings that made her an icon. The film uses animation, archival footage, and personal writings to bring Kahlo's paintings to life, presenting the first documentary to be told entirely through her own words and those of her intimates. Kahlo's paintings were a source of catharsis for her, helping her cope with miscarriages and her husband's infidelities. The film offers a unique and in-depth examination of Kahlo's inner workings and her journey as an artist." [Extracted from the article]
